"I was a stranger and you welcomed me."
~ Matthew 25: 35
The Usher along with the greeter is a person chosen to reflect the warmth and welcome of Christ Himself. Ushers should always be conscious of Christ's words: "I was a stranger and you welcomed me". The faith of the usher enables them to see Christ's presence in all individuals and in the gathered community of believers. Ushers assist parishioners and visitors to find seating, take up the collection, direct the community to receive the Eucharist and can handle emergency situations with courage and composure with a dignity about themselves even when performing menial tasks.
New ushers are provided with an orientation that includes a tour of the church to learn the various duties and procedures. An Ushers Handbook is also provided which includes detailed descriptions of the duties and procedures. New ushers are scheduled to work with experienced ushers for the first few times.
Periodic meetings are held with all the ushers whenever there are major changes or there is a need to address everyone as a group.
We are always open to receiving new members in the Ushers Ministry. We encourage the 'younger' members of our parish to join the group as many of our current ushers have served for many years and are ready to retire from the ministry.
Presently we schedule ushers for the 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 7:00 pm Sunday masses at Good Shepherd only. Most ushers are scheduled to usher about every third week. So with more ushers they would have to usher only once a month – not a heavy commitment!
Please contact Neil & Bernice Jangula if you are interested in joining the Ushering Ministry.
